Where the Name Comes From

"Serai" is short for caravanserai — the roadside inns that once dotted the Silk Road, where travelers, traders, and locals would stop to rest, eat, and swap stories before continuing on their way. They weren't fancy. They were just reliably, genuinely welcoming — a place anyone could walk into and immediately feel like they belonged. That's the idea we've tried to bring to Clark Street: an old tradition of hospitality, reworked for a modern Lincoln Park cafe.

Independently Owned, On Purpose

Serai Cafe & Deli isn't part of a chain, and that's intentional. Being independently owned means the people making decisions about the menu, the coffee, and how the space feels are the same people you'll see behind the counter — not a corporate office somewhere else. It means we can actually adjust based on what the neighborhood wants, instead of following a script written for a hundred other locations.
